men’s corner: dating attire…

a few weeks back i worked with a male client who was diving back into the dating pool…he needed some help with getting together some outfits…he wanted to look pulled together…not sloppy…and approachable…being that he hadn’t dated in quite a while…he wasn’t sure what was appropriate…

now…my client is rather conservative…so i had to take that into account…but really…these rules apply to just about everybody…whether you are conservative…or a little more edgy…

the #1 thing to always consider is…fit!

it doesn’t matter what clothes you have…what labels you wear…if the fit is not right…the look will not be right…i find that most men have a hard time with their jeans…when we are talking fit…we are talking about the fit around the waist…but also…rear end and legs…and last…but certainly not least…the length…too long is just as bad as too short…if you are not sure…have someone help you…

so…what are some things to consider when putting together that dating wardrobe…

i always say a good tailored blazer goes a long way…a casual blazer is a good thing to have in ones wardrobe regardless of dating…really…but for those evenings out…this adds a nice finished look to your outfit…all you need is one or two in a neutral color…black, navy blue or brown…

when it comes to your dress shirts…i would look for color, prints & textures…the patterns you choose can play into your personality…and if prints scare you…you can always go for a tone on tone stripe…they will add interest to your wardrobe…and some fun to your whole look…and again…make sure the fit is right…

one way to neutralize a patterned shirt is to add a sweater in a fun but solid color…as in the pic below…fit is key…you don’t want the sweater too tight…or too loose…have fun with your sweaters…you can do for a crew neck, button down…variety makes for a fun wardrobe…

the shoes…believe me when i say…women notice them…so whether you are thinking loafer, boot or lace-up…make sure that they are modern…and polished…

the finishing touches are just as important…so think about your belt, watch…socks…these little elements are fun ways to bring in your personality…if you haven’t updated your accessories in a while…now may be the time…it is in the details that good outfits are made…

and yes…while you can wear what you usually wear to work…my question is…why would you? this is a different part of your life…and it should be given the same amount of attention as anything else…you deserve it! and your date will notice…trust me…

need help? my client went on his first date feeling confidant…and put together…i can do the same for you!
